10th International Capacity Building Workshop – Sustainability and Added values of heritage site rehabilitation was held in Tbilisi on July 14-15th within the EaP Culture Programme’s project Regional Co-operation for Cultural Heritage Development
The goal of the workshop was to bring together experts of different profile from Armenia, Georgia, Norway and Ukraine to hold 2 days brainstorming and to discuss various aspects of heritage values for sustainable development. It aimed at elaborating a draft outline for implementation of sustainable project - showcase restoration of historic building (selected by workshop organisers) in Old Tbilisi with following objectives: to buy an endangered historic building for non-profit foundation; to perform show case restoration of historic building accompanied with series of trainings on traditional carpentry, masonry, surface treatment, structural consolidation etc.; Based on these activities to elaborate guidelines for rehabilitation of Tbilisi Historic Building; To promote added values such as: educational, job opportunities, ecological issues, etc.; To sell rehabilitated property for proper reuse and to accumulate revolving funds for further similar activity. The aim is to build sustainable project both in terms of quality of restoration and economic values. The participants heard about Mr. Ivar Koteng’s (Norway) experience as a private businessman investing in historic properties’ restoration and discussed the possible scheme of the project to be implemented in Tbilisi Historic District. Within the workshop several houses which could be chose for the project were identified and visited.
