Editorial
Dear Colleagues,

ICOMOS Georgia and its partners – ICOMOS Armenia, Ltd. Architectura I Prestizh (Ukraine) and Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage – are pleased to announce that issue 3 of the regional e-magazine Heritage Conservation. Regional Network Journal, established within the EU funded project Regional Co-operation for Cultural Heritage Development, is now available online.

Issue 3 of our e-magazine is prevailed by the articles focused on the architectural heritage conservation issues, showing that there are common problems with the recognition of the values and protection of architectural heritage, but different solutions in tackling them. While S. Amiraslanova (Azerbaijan) deals with the positive case of careful restoration of the Garabaghlar complex, S. Ion (Moldova) discusses problems of treatment of the ecclesiastical monuments of Moldova and Dr. L. Gnatyuk (Ukraine) is concerned with the security problems of the wooden churches of Ukraine and sacred objects kept in them. Another issue of particular interest in terms of architectural heritage is very specific approach of museification of monuments, which is discussed by E. Ploshnita (Moldova). Group of authors – N. Churikova, Yu. Rudnytsky, O. Lysak (Ukraine) present Radomysl Castle case, as the best practice of the private initiative, ensuring protection of the heritage site and its development. Rich archaeological heritage of Armenia and problems of its protection are presented by A. Meshinyan (Armenia) and a group of authors – A. Bobokhyan (Armenia), A. Gilibert (Germany), P. Hnila (Germany). Recent interventions in the Mtskheta (World Heritage Site) and their impact on its cultural landscape are analysed by Dr. Ts. Chachkhunashvili (Georgia).

Cultural Heritage and the New Reality at the Turn of the 21st Century
After the disintegration of the colossal Soviet empire, the majority of its former republics suddenly came to face challenges associated with the protection of their cultural heritage. Natural and cultural landscapes and architecture representing national symbols and urban heritage came under threat. Protected territories of significant historical and cultural value appeared especially attractive for new construction projects.

The care of Azerbaijan to valuable architectural monuments increase day-by-day. It can be said according to restoration and conservation works carried out on monuments in different regions of Azerbaijan and implementing of different local and international projects in this direction.

Individual Protection Methods for Cultural Heritage Monuments
Today, in times of an independent Ukraine, along with the processes of economic development, culture and education, there are many problems for which decision has not yet found the best ways. Specifically we talk about preservation of wooden churches, which are of a great historical, architectural and cultural value.

Ecclesiastical Architecture in Moldova between Protection and Degradation
Architectural patrimony is one of the most representative pages of the cultural heritage of mankind, study and protection of which became mandatory norm of each country. Knowledge of the architecture goals allows us a better understanding of the historical past and their recovery and preservation should be part of a sustainable legal protection regime.

Vishapakars/Dragon Stones: High-Altitude Monuments in Armenia and Problem of Their Protection
“Dragon stones” (Arm. vishapakar) are stelae carved with animal imagery found in the high-altitude summer pastures of modern Armenia and neighboring regions (Javakheti/Trialeti, Nakhijevan, Erzurum/Kars). Evidently, the dragon stones are highly symbolic artifacts.

Erebouni Fortress: an Example of an Endangered Heritage
In 1950, during archaeological excavations a cuneiform inscription was discovered at Arin Berd, which clarified the fact of construction of Erebouni city-fortress.

The Role of the Cultural Heritage and the Personality in Reviving the Historical Memory of the Nation
Radomysl Castle is a historical and cultural site which combines many important historical roles; it is a fortification, an old paper manufactory, a museum of the Ukrainian home icons, a landscape park, a sculpture park, a water monument, etc.

The Museification of Monuments in Moldova: Facts and Requisites
The issue of protecting and highlighting cultural heritage was and still remains one of the most difficult, even vulnerable matters, although during the last 10 to 15 years several models, methods, international standards, laws with regard to the protection of historical monuments and culture, of tangible and intangible heritage were elaborated.
